“Patent pending” is a phrase often marked on goods or manufactured items meaning a patent application has been filed on inventive subject matter of the manufactured item. Marking a product “patent pending” serves as a warning and notice that a patent may issue to cover the item. Falsely marking the phrase “patent pending” on a product occurs when no patent application has been filed and is punishable by a fine under 35 USC 292.
