Group Art Units are USPTO working units responsible for a cluster of related patent art. They are staffed by patent examiners and one supervisory patent examiner (SPE) who determine the patentability of applications. Group Art Units are identified by a four digit number, e.g., 1592 ” and may be abbreviated in correspondence as “AU,” “GAU” or “Grp Art Unit”.
