There are three types of U.S. national stage patent applications:

1. an application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty – enters the U.S. national stage via an international application after compliance with 35 USC 371;
2. a regular domestic national application filed under 35 USC 111(a); and
3. a provisional application filed under 35 USC 111(b).
